Gísli Jónsson was born in Háreksstaðir in Jökuldalsheiði on February 9, 1876. He graduated from Möðruvallaskóli in 1896 and then studied printing in Akureyri. In 1903 he moved to Canada, where he later became a printing director in Winnipeg. He was one of the founders of the magazine Heimis and editor of the Tímarit Þjóðræknisfélag Íslendinga from 1940 to 1969.
Two books of poetry were published after Gísli: Farfuglar í Winnipeg 1919 and Fardagar 1956.
