Stefán Hörður Grímsson was born in Hafnarfjörður on March 31, 1919. He studied at Laugarvatn School and at the Reykjavík Student Union. He worked in agriculture and seafaring, was a swimming teacher and a night watchman. Stefán Hörður's first book of poetry, Glugginn snýr í norður (1946), is considered a typical beginner's work, where the author treads well-trodden paths in form and expression and follows in the footsteps of older poets. In another tone, he sings in his second book of poetry, Svartálfadans (1951). The book attracted much attention and admiration, and it was considered that Stefán Hörður emerged as a fully-formed modernist and atomic poet. Nineteen years passed before his next book of poetry, Hliðin á sláttunni (1970). Eleven more years passed until Farvegir (1981) was published. In 1987 he published the poetry book Tengsl (Connections), which was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1989. Two years later, a second book of poetry, Yfir heiðan morgun (Over the Heath Morning), was published. For this book he was the first person to receive the Icelandic Literature Prize. Stefán Harðar's poetry has been translated into other languages ​​and published in poetry collections.
