Ólafur Ólafsson (or Ólafur Olavius) (1741-1788) was a writer, publisher, and scholar. He lived most of his life in Denmark.
Ólafur was born in Eyri in Seyðisfjörður in North Ísafjörður County. He was Ólafsson but Latinized his name in accordance with the learned custom of the time. Olavius graduated from Skálholt School and began medical studies with Bjarni Pálsson, the medical director, in 1762. He began his studies at the University of Copenhagen in 1765 and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1768.
Ólafur mainly wrote books and pamphlets in the field of business life to encourage Icelanders to increase their initiative. His most notable works are Ökonomisk Reise igiennem Island, which describes the business practices of Icelanders in the second half of the 18th century. Ólafur was among the founders of the Lærdómslistafélag. He also founded a printing press in Hrappsey in Breiðafjörður, which was the first printing press in the country to publish secular literature.
Ingibjörg, Olavius' sister, was the grandmother of President Jón Sigurðsson.
