Travelogue. Reports on research in Iceland 1882-1898 by Þorvald Thoroddsen. Jón Eyþórsson prepared the printing. Halldór Pétursson drew a portrait of the author on the title page and vignettes above the chapter headings. The work is in four volumes. This is the second edition.
Þorvaldur Thoroddsen was born on June 6, 1855 in Flatey in Breiðafjörður. He was the firstborn of his parents, Jón Thoroddsen, a poet and sheriff, and Kristín Þorvaldsdóttir. Jón's best-known works are the novels Piltur og stúlka (A Boy and a Girl) (1850) and Maður og kona (A Man and a Woman) (1876).
Þorvaldur attended the Reykjavík School of Education and graduated in 1875, at the age of twenty, and that same summer he went to university in Copenhagen. At first he planned to study zoology, but in his second year he turned to geology and geography.
When a job became available in Iceland, he dropped out of school on the advice of his teachers in order to secure a living. He taught at first, first at Möðruvellir and then in Reykjavík until 1895, when he moved to Copenhagen. There he devoted himself mostly to writing, and The History of Iceland is the first of his major works.
Þorvaldur is best known for his travels and research in Iceland, the results of which include two fundamental works, Ferðabók (Travelogue) and Lýsing Íslands (Description of Iceland).
In late 1895, Þorvaldur Thoroddsen moved with his family to Copenhagen and lived there until his death, September 28, 1921. He was only 66 years old. His cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage.
