Biography 1956-1975. Poems by Jóhann S. Hannesson.
Jóhann Hannesson, former schoolmaster in Laugarvatn, was born in Siglufjörður on April 10, 1919, the son of Hannes Jónasson, a bookseller, and Kristín Þorsteinsdóttir. He graduated with an MA in 1939 and a degree in English and linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1945. With the exception of the years 1947-1950, when he was a teacher at the Vesturbær Secondary School in Reykjavík and then an assistant professor of English at the University of Iceland, he was in America studying and working until 1959. For most of that time, 1952-1959, he was a librarian at The Fiske Icelandic Collection at Cornell University in Ithaca.
He then returned home and was a schoolmaster at Laugarvatn High School from 1960 to 1970. He then worked at the Reykjavík Education Office from 1970 to 1972, and then as a teacher at Hamrahlíð High School. In his final years, he was on leave from teaching, but worked on the preparation of a new English-Icelandic dictionary.
