Jón Magnússon was born at Glúmsstaðir in Fljótsdalur, the son of farmer Magnús Jónsson and his first wife Sigurbjörg Jónsdóttir. When Jón was two years old, his parents moved to Hrolllaugsstaðir in Hjaltastaðaþinghá and his mother died there when he was only 5 years old. Jón grew up with his father and stepmother Þóra Eyjólfsdóttir. At the age of 16 he went to work as a laborer and spent most of his time with his father Magnús in Vallanes. In 1910, Magnús moved to Reykjavík and there he embarked on a long journey that earned him the nickname Afrikafari. He was hired to work at a new whaling station that whaler Ellefsen had begun to build in southern Africa. Jón stayed in Africa for three years and lived there through thick and thin.
