Guðmundur Hjaltason (July 17, 1853 – January 26, 1919) was an Icelandic teacher and scholar. Guðmundur was born in Ásbjarnarstaðir in Stafholtstungur. He was a promising student and was supported in his education by Jón Jónsson, a land surveyor, and several farmers in Seltjarnarnes. Guðmundur went to study at Vonheim School in Norway, where the principal, Kristófer Bruun, was a revivalist and herald of the Grundtvig movement in Norway. When his schooling in Vonheim ended, Guðmundur went to Denmark to the folk high school in Askov. He spent three winters there, first studying and later teaching Nordic studies and history. He moved to Iceland after seven years abroad, traveling around the South of Iceland the first summer and giving lectures. He then took a job as a salesman for Reverend Arnljót the priest at Bægisá and stayed there for twenty summers. During the summer he worked various jobs, but in the winter he took up teaching.
Guðmundur ran a school in the winter of 1883-1884 for ten to thirteen boys from Þingeyjarsýsla in Laufás at the home of Reverend Magnús, father of Jón Magnússon, who later became prime minister. Guðmundur then founded a school in Oddeyri that operated from 1884-86, and received a grant for it from public funds. 24 men attended the Oddeyri school. There were no exams at the school because Guðmundur believed that exams did more harm than good. After that, Guðmundur went east to Kelduhverfi and was a teacher there and in Axarfjörður and the Mývatn region for eleven years. Guðmundur went on lecture tours to Norway. He had various friends there, such as Henrik Ibsen and Björnstjerne Björnson.
