Icelanders have one of the best living conditions known among the nations of the world, and can largely thank the rich fishing grounds around the country for this. But fishing has required courage and resilience, as the country is located in the middle of the North Atlantic, where fishermen have to contend with harsh weather conditions. On land, fish processors and workers have long put in long hours processing the raw material. This is discussed in words and pictures in this book. The book features a number of photographs by photographer Kristin Benediktsson. He took them at sea and in marine locations far and wide around the country and the hinterland between 1976 and 1979. Historian Arnþór Gunnarsson wrote the book's text. Together, the pictures and text provide a rare insight into the Icelandic fishing industry. The book is also published in English under the title Fishing in the North Atlantic. (Bókatíðindi 2005).
