Chairman's life in the Islands. The biography of Þorsteinn Jónsson written by himself.
Þorsteinn Jónsson was born in Gularáshjáleig in the Austur Landeyjar on October 14, 1880 and died on March 25, 1965. He was the son of Jón Einarsson and Þórunn Þorsteinsdóttir. They moved to the Vestmannaeyjar in 1883. Þorsteinn had a brother, Ísleif Jónsson, who died in the 1896 Southern Iceland earthquake while he was in a farm in Dufþekja.
Þorsteinn was married to Elínborga Gísladóttir and they had 13 children. They were Þórhildur b. 1903, deceased, Unnur, b. 1904, deceased, Gísli, b. 1906, deceased, Ásta, b. 1908, deceased, Jón, b. 1910, deceased, Fjóla, b. 1912, Ebba, b. 1916, deceased, Anna, b. 1919, Bera, b. 1921, Jón, b. 1923, Dagný, b. 1926, Ebba, b. 1927, deceased and Ástþór, b. 1936, Unnur's son, grew up with them.
Þorsteinn began his seafaring career loading open ships with Hannes Lóðs in Miðhús. He then became chairman of the rail company Ísak in 1900 and remained with him until 1905.
He was, along with others, the first to buy a motorboat for the Vestmannaeyjar Islands, thus marking the beginning of the motorboat era in the Vestmannaeyjar Islands. The boat that Þorsteinn and his friends bought was named Unnur and Þorsteinn was chairman. He later acquired two other boats with the same name and was chairman of them until 1948, having been chairman for a total of 48 years.
Þorsteinn was very progressive in fishing matters and was, among other things, the first to experiment with cod fishing in nets. He was made an honorary citizen of Vestmannaeyjar when he turned seventy on October 14, 1950.
Þorsteinn had a great interest in writing and left behind a number of publications and articles. He wrote two books; his autobiography, Formannsævi í Eyjar and also Aldahvörf í Eyjar which is a detailed description of the course of the century in the Eyjar following the beginning of the motorboat industry.
Thorsteinn died at the age of 84.
