There are two remarkable men involved in the publication of this book in Icelandic. The author Clarence Day was an American New Yorker of distinguished lineage. His father was a member of the Stock Exchange and his mother was from a respectable American family. After graduating, Clarence took a seat on the Stock Exchange. During the Spanish-American War, he was treasurer on one of the American Navy's warships. Around the turn of the century, he became crippled by arthritis and then took up writing. The story in question, In the Father's Garden, is probably his best-known work.
Guðjón F. Teitsson is no less remarkable a man. He was born on February 14, 1906 in Grímarstaðir in Andakílshreppur in Borgarfjörður and raised there. Guðjón studied at Flensborg School 1920-23 and then the Cooperative School 1925-26. In the fall of 1928 he sailed to Copenhagen and took a job at the office of Bornholms Dampskibeselskab. There he became acquainted with shipping on land and later made that work his life's work. After studying at Skerry's College in Edinburgh in 1929, he returned to Iceland and began working at the Ministry of Justice in the operation of the guard ships in the fall of 1929. At the end of 1929, the State Shipping Company was established and Guðjón was appointed office manager there, a position he held until 1953, when he was appointed director of the Shipping Company after Pálmi Loftsson passed away. Guðjón held that position for 23 years until November 1, 1976, when he retired due to old age. He had then worked for the Shipping Company for almost 47 years. In 1966, a law was passed on the Board of Directors of the Shipping Company, and Guðjón was chairman until April 1, 1977.
