From Hvanndalur to Úlfsdalur. Elements from the history of Hvanneyrarhreppur. Compiled by Sigurjón Sigtryggsson.
In this work, Sigurjón Sigtryggsson undertakes the monumental task of telling the story of the people in one of the most remote and harshly populated regions of the country. He uses the classic method of Icelandic scholars, genealogy, in addition to providing a solid account of the people's living conditions, farming methods, and other external circumstances. Here, every farm and hamlet is described according to land registers and other sources, dating back to 1703, the richness of the land and its benefits are mentioned, and every single inhabitant is mentioned in the story, their lineage is traced, and everything that can be gleaned about each individual in the meager sources is gathered. But first and foremost, this is a personal story, an attempt to preserve the story of ordinary rural people, people who do not leave a big mark on history, but who nevertheless create it through their hard work. This method of writing history has long been a favorite of us Icelanders, but here it has been taken to a higher level. (Cover text).
