French biscuit. The French Icelandic sailors. Compiled by Elín Pálmadóttir.

The French are here!” shouted the people in the fishing villages of Iceland when the French schooners appeared under white sails in sight. For three centuries, numerous French fishing boats fished for cod in the Icelandic waters. The life on board, from the time they set sail in late winter until they returned home at the end of summer, involved hardship and hardship, but the benefits were great when the catch was good, supporting villages and towns and providing enough for families at home to endure another year. The French sailors, some barely out of childhood, rarely came ashore unless something happened. Nevertheless, there was considerable contact with the countrymen, and French hospitals and cemeteries were built here for those who had no return.
