Niels Horrebow was born in Copenhagen in 1712. He studied astronomy and mathematics for a while, but then studied law and defended his doctoral thesis in those subjects. In 1749, he was sent by the Danish Society of Sciences to Iceland to make various observations and descriptions of the country, its natural features and industrial practices. He stayed here for two years with rather meager means. He had poor equipment and little money for travel. Horrebow was called home, although with full honors for his work. But in his place, Eggert Ólafsson and Bjarni Pálsson began to study the country on behalf of the Danish Society of Sciences. Horrebow wrote a book when he returned, which was published in 1752.
Horrebow's work was a kind of defense to refute the slander about Iceland that had appeared in a book by a German author named Johann Anderson. He had written a book about Iceland and he based his knowledge of Iceland on the accounts of Danish merchants and sailors who sailed between Iceland and Gluckstad. This book was published in Danish translation in 1947 and was a great exaggeration.
