Þórunn Jarla Valdimarsdóttir was born on August 25, 1954 and is from Reykjavik. She studied history in Lund, Sweden, in 1973-1974, and history and art at the Instituto Allende in Mexico in 1977-1978. She completed her Cand Mag degree in history from the University of Iceland in 1983 and has since worked as a writer. She has written twenty books – novels, poetry, biographies and historical works – as well as numerous articles and programs for radio and television. She wrote the children's story Sól í norðurmýri (1993) and the short story Dag kvennanna (2010) with Megas.
Þórunn's first novel, Höfuðskepnur, was published in 1994. The novel Alveg nóg was nominated for the DV Cultural Prize in 1997 and Stúlka með fingur subsequently won the DV Cultural Prize in 1999 and was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 2001. Þórunn's novels Kalt er annars blóð (2007) and Mörg eru ljónsins eyru (2010) are crime novels set in the present day but both are based on Icelandic sagas, the former on Njála and the latter on Laxdæla. They were both nominated for the Icelandic Literature Prize in the fiction category, but Þórunn has also received nominations there in the non-fiction category for the books Snorri á Húsafell: saga frá 18. öld (1989), Til móts við móðiðnn (4th volume of Christianity in Iceland, 2000) and Up á sigurhæðir: saga Matthíasar Jochumssonar (2006).
