Antithesis verses. Attributed to Bjarni Jónsson, a poet from Borgfjord. With illustrations by Örlyg Sigurðsson.
Bjarni Jónsson, a poet, variously called Bjarni the Poet, Húsafells-Bjarni, Bjarni the Poet in Bæ and sometimes Borgfirðingaskáld, was alive around the turn of the century 1600. Various rhymes are attributed to Bjarni, including Ekkjurími and the first part (the first 15 rhymes) of Rímum af Flóres og Leó. Hallgrímur Pétursson then wrote the second part of the rhymes. Bjarni also wrote poems and hymns, and the hymns are attributed to him: Gæskuríkasti græðari minn and Heyr mín hljóð, which have been extremely beloved, and it is clear from what Bjarni the Poet is known for and has come down to us that he has been one of the best poets of his time and has greatly influenced Hallgrímur. He is also considered to have been the first to compose antiphonal verses in Icelandic.
