Signý was born at Húsabakki in Aðaldalur. Her parents were Hjálmar Kristjánsson and Kristrún Snorradóttir. Signý was the only one of the couple's 13 children. The couple Hjálmar and Kristrún were both intelligent and cheerful, and the atmosphere in the home was shaped by cultural endeavors, optimism, and love.
Signý studied at Siglufjörður Secondary School and when she graduated there she met her destiny. On her way there was a young and handsome man, Baldur Guðmundsson from Sandi in Aðaldalur. She gave him her heart and mind and with the optimism of youth they built their dream lands. Thus it came about that Dalurinn claimed its daughter back, a full-grown, gorgeous girl.
