Colette's real name is Gabrielle de Jovenel. She was born in 1873 and died in 1954, by then world-famous for her poetry, considered one of the best French writers of this century. Colette describes women with great brilliance - and indeed men too.
She manages to be bolder than most without using harsh language. She is well aware that a person is both soul and body, intertwined, inseparable. She writes a lot about the relationship between the sexes, the weaker and the stronger, but she is never lacking in bold realism, and this is perhaps not the least of the reasons for her worldwide popularity.
This story, GIGI, was written in 1954. It has been made into a film and has received unanimous praise. However, the film lacks much of the magic that the book possesses.
