The Path of Time. A novel by Sten Nadolny. Translated by Arthúr Björgvin Bollason.
The story is about the famous English navigator and explorer John Franklin (1786-1847). The Franklin that Nadolny has created differs in many ways from the historical model. He is unusually slow in speech and thought and in all reactions and sets a different standard for time than most people around him. The entire story is told from the perspective of the slow-witted man. This tells of Franklin's youth until he joins the navy. He takes part in the bloody naval battles of Copenhagen and Trafalgar. After his career in the navy ends, he becomes an explorer and embarks on difficult expeditions in search of a northern shipping route from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Finally, he becomes the colonial governor of Tasmania.
