The story is about the famous English navigator and explorer John Franklin (1786-1847). The Franklin that Nadolny has created differs in many ways from the historical model. He is unusually slow in speech and thought and in all reactions and sets a different standard for time than most people around him. After his career in the navy ends, he becomes an explorer and embarks on difficult expeditions in search of a northern shipping route from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Finally, he becomes the colonial governor of Tasmania.
