Gouache. A poem and short story by Sigurður Vilhjálmsson.
Góubeitlar is Sigurður Vilhjálmsson's only book.
Siguður was born at Geirastaðir in the Mývatn region in 1880. His parents later moved to Máskot in Reykjadalur, where he grew up to adulthood. He later became a farmer there, but later moved his farm to Illugastaðir in Fnjoskadalur. He then moved to Akureyri in 1934 and died there in March 1948.
Siguður was a man of inquisitiveness and splendidly self-educated, although he did not attend school for long. In his youth, he did receive some education from his uncles, Sigurður Jónsson in Yztafell and Reverend Árni in Skútustaðir. This education must have been useful to him. He studied English, among other things, and was a sought-after companion for foreign tourists.
Those who knew Sigurður knew that he dabbled in poetry, although he did not write much. A few of his poems did appear in magazines, including the travel poems Sólskinsblettir, which appeared in Óðir and were later specially printed in a small edition. It is likely that these poems are now in few hands.
The book that is available here was largely prepared by Sigurður for printing before his death and he chose the name Góubeitur for it. It will contain only a portion of Sigurður's poems, but probably those that he himself would have considered most worthy of preserving. (Cover text).
