Kristjana Hrefna Ingibjörg Sigurðardóttir was born on May 21, 1920 in Laufás, Þingeyri near Dýrafjörður.
Hrefna grew up in Þingeyri, writing and singing songs with her sister as a child, but was a very versatile artist, writing poems and songs, playing the piano and guitar, harmonica and accordion. She placed the greatest emphasis on visual art, especially watercolor and ink drawings on paper, but also on wood panels.
Hrefna was very involved in theater and choir work in Patreksfjörður, Kópavogur and Reykjavík and played guitar and sang with a group of women in one scene in the film Stella on Vacation. Hrefna was very concerned with keeping things lively and fun wherever she was, whether it was at family gatherings, the NLFÍ Health Center in Hveragerði or with friends at the theater or at choir practice.
Hrefna was a folk artist and the Museum of Icelandic Art at Eyjafjörður held two exhibitions of her work. The second time was a solo exhibition the summer before she died.
Hrefna published three books of poetry, the first two books mostly rhyming poems, but the last book has a much larger number of unrhymed poems. Her first two books are characterized by a certain slowness and sadness, but the last one is much lighter.
In 1944, Hrefna married Kjartan Th. Ingimundarson, a captain. He was also very artistic and left behind a lot of poems and verses, as well as many paintings and carved works of art. Hrefna and Kjartan had 5 children.
