Guðjón Samúelsson was the first Icelander in the 20th century to complete a university degree in architecture. He was appointed to the position of State Architect in April 1920 and held that position for thirty years, until his death in 1950. During this period, he and his colleagues designed most of the public buildings of the sovereign state and gave its main institutions a visible and tangible form. Guðjón also became involved in planning matters, drawing up plans for several of the country's major towns and advising the government on planning matters. He saw cities and towns as solid works of art that would have a beneficial effect on the health and well-being of the inhabitants.
In this book, the author, Pétur H. Ármannsson, examines the work and ideas of Guðjón Samúelsson from the perspective of his unique position as a university-educated architect who was shaped by trends and directions in Nordic and European architecture in the first decades of the 20th century. Pétur draws attention to how Guðjón utilized his education and knowledge in special and difficult circumstances that nevertheless gave him the opportunity to have a broader impact on the built environment in the country than any other Icelandic architect has had before or since.
