Guðmundur Friðjónsson. Life and work. Þóroddur Guðmundsson from Sandi compiled and studied.
Guðmundur Friðjónsson frá Sandi (1869 – 1944) was a writer, poet and farmer who lived on the farm Sandi in Aðaldalur in Suður-Þingeyjarsýsla. He is best known for his unique writing style.
Guðmundur was born at Silalæk in Aðaldalur where his father, Friðjón Jónsson, was a farmer at the time. Friðjón later moved to Sandi and Guðmundur took over the farm from his father. Guðmundur attended Möðruvallaskóli from 1891-1893 and that was his only education. From then on he became a farmer and an active writer and was often featured in newspapers and magazines across the country. For many years he had the custom of getting up from his farm and giving lectures on various national issues, his ideas and ideals. Guðmundur's brother, Sigurjón Friðjónsson, was also a writer and, like his brother, wrote about many issues that were not generally discussed and controversial.
Guðmundur's first book of poems was published in 1902 and was called Úr heimahögam, but before that he had published short stories, poems and story sections in Eimreiðinn. For the next few years Guðmundur kept busy, writing short sections and stories, composing poems and publishing some of these here and there. He wrote essays on various topics in newspapers and magazines. In 1904 he published a collection of animal stories, Undir beru lofti. In 1907 his only novel, Ólöf í Ási, was published. The story received mixed reviews, was considered to be sloppy and even immoral in parts. Guðmundur did not write longer stories, as he must have had difficulty accepting writing assignments that required a long stay.
