The H-list. Election bulletin. 1st – 2nd issues, 1st volume, 1962. The H-list's election bulletin, a list of independent abstentionists in the 1962 city council elections. Only these two issues were published.
Independent Temperance Party was the informal name for the Temperance Party candidacy in the 1962 Reykjavík city council elections. The list received almost 900 votes, or about 2.5% of the votes cast, and was far from being elected as a city council member.
The temperance campaign had a short lead-up. In early 1962, a group of temperance enthusiasts sent a letter to all political parties requesting that declared temperance activists be given safe seats, or else an independent candidacy would be called for. The letter received a lukewarm response.
A list of candidates was presented about a month before the election. In first place was Gísli Sigurbjörnsson, director of the Grund nursing home. He was followed by Benedikt Bjarklind, a senior pastor, Mrs. Sigþrúður Pétursdóttir, and writer Loftur Guðmundsson.
The candidate's manifesto focused almost exclusively on abstinence issues. It demanded that the city council stop serving alcohol at parties, that restrictions on the sale of alcohol be increased, that financial support be provided to abstinence organizations, and that a shelter for alcoholics be built.
The offer did not enjoy formal support from the Good Templar Movement, and the Independence Party's manifesto strongly emphasized that it would be more natural for the abstinence party to rally behind the Independence Party. The Independent Abstinence Party did not continue its activities after the elections.
