Haföldur. Poem by Ásmundur Jónsson from Skúfsstaðir.
Ásmundur Jónsson was born in Skúfsstaðir in Hjaltadalur in 1899. His parents were Jón Sigurðsson, a farmer and county council member in Skúfsstaðir, and his wife Guðrún Þorsteinsdóttir, a housewife.
Ásmundur grew up in Skúfsstaðir and received a good home education. He became well-read in Icelandic literature, poetry and stories at an early age, went to Reykjavík at a young age and became an employee at the Danish embassy. He also worked in commerce and journalism for a while, publishing the newspaper Neista in Siglufjörður.
Ásmundur spent a long time abroad, mostly in Denmark and Germany. He married a Danish opera singer, Irma Weile, in 1938.
Ásmundur was a fine poet and three books of poetry were published after him, Haföldur 1922, Skýjafar 1936 and then a collection of poems about Hóli in Hjaltadalur in 1932. No more of his works were published, but he was a man of sailing, endowed with excellent talents, widely read and had a good command of the Icelandic language, both spoken and written, and was endowed with a good gift for storytelling, as he was completely lifted by the warmth of memories, especially when he told stories about Reverend Matthías and then about Einar Benediktsson, for whom Ásmundur worked for a while. It should be noted that Ásmundur was the last of the Icelandic poets to recite poems to the Icelandic king.
