Hammer and sickle. Poem by Sigurður Einarsson.
Upper-class literature
He is poor, she is rich.
He barely has any clothes to wear,
with firmness, discretion, and a wealth of piety
She earns bread at her father's.
She is endowed with every virtue,
modesty, beauty, love, loyalty,
sacred innocence and peace of heart.
He is as beautiful as Apollo.
She begins to love the young man.
He finds it sooner than he can speak,
that there the heart will yearn,
proposes and gets her "yes".
Then comes magic and moonlight,
trembling hearts and a flood of kisses.
And finally here soul speaks to soul
Happy bird lovers.
Then the man gets into this game,
There will be tears, but it won't be enough.
He receives no wages or half a day's wages.
She has seizures and faints.
She always walks in sorrow and grief.
He will become rich in a foreign city,
then comes home and buys a house.
The man and he will be happy and content.
The souls are drawn together again.
Then comes the party and the drunkenness.
Then it will be midnight – a heavenly hum.
They both sleep in a newly purchased bed.
