Sven Anders Hedin, born August 19, 1750 at Huseby farm in Kronobergs län, died October 19, 1821 in Stockholm, was a Swedish physician.
Hedin became a student in Uppsala in 1769 and a doctor of medicine in 1775. He was later active in Stockholm, admitted in 1778 to court physician and appointed in 1781 to assessor in the Collegium medicum. In the same year, he undertook a foreign scientific trip and returned to Stockholm in 1783, where he, after having unsuccessfully held the professorship in botany at Uppsala University, was appointed in 1785 to the first serving court physician and in 1792 was promoted to provincial doctor in Svartsjö län. From 1798 to 1808 he was intendant at the Medevi well. During the Finnish war of 1808–09, he was field doctor at the hospital at Drottningholm Palace. In 1813, he was appointed to the medical council in Sundhetskollegium.
He has written extensively on a number of subjects, but his writings are mostly only compilations of previous knowledge. The most important of his works are the journals "Vetenskapshandlinger för läkera och fältskärer" (1793–99, 1803–05), "Vetenskapsjournal för läkera och fältskärer" (1800–01) and "Collections in mixed topics för läkaervetenskapen och naturforskären" (1810–12).
For the spread of medical knowledge among the general public, he published, among other things, On the benefits that mothers themselves give to their children (1786), Handbok för praktiska läkeravetenskapen (1796, second edition 1798; supplement 1805) and Utkast till en handbok för brunnsgäster (1803). As a member of the Collegium medicum and among the brochures Kopporna kunna utrotas (1802) and Om smittkoppor och tøringsmedel deremot (1808) he worked vigorously for the introduction of vaccinations. In special works, he described different aspects of the work of his teacher Carl von Linnés, for example in Qvid Linneo patri debate medicina? (1784) and Minne af von Linné, father and son (1808). He became a member of the Vetenskapsakademien in 1804 and was often used to hold memorials for the academy's departed members.
