Autumn colors. Poem by Maria Bjarnadóttir.
María, was born on June 7, 1896 in Kárdalstunga in Vatnsdalur, d. March 11, 1976 in Reykjavík. Her parents were Sigríður Hjálmarsdóttir (granddaughter of Bóla-Hjálmar) and Bjarni Jónsson, originally from Akranes.
María first came to Norðfjörður with her brothers, who were spending the summer here, in 1913; she was 17 years old. There she met her future husband, Bjarni Antoníusson.
Bjarni, was born on August 17, 1888 in Arnhólsstaðir in Skriðdalur, d. May 27, 1975 in Norðfjörður. His father was Antoníus Björnsson from Álftafjörður, a farmer in Arnhólsstaðir and Flaga in Skriðdalur for a long time. He lived for a time in Kirkjuból in Vöðlavík, and later in Norðfjörður. His mother was Guðrún Kristín Arnfinnsdóttir from Arnhólsstaðir in Skriðdalur.
María and Bjarni married on November 2, 1916 and started their farm in Norðfjörður. Bjarni was a fisherman at the time. They lived in Norðfjörður for the most part until 1930. In 1930 they moved to Akureyri and lived there and in Siglufjörður and Ólafsfjörður for a while. In 1937 they headed east again. In Mjóafjörður they lived for a few years, first in Kross and then in Reyk. From there they moved back to Norðfjörður in 1944. They built a house on Mýrargata, where they lived until they moved to Reykjavík in 1960.
Both of Maria's parents were poets. In 1964, Maria published a small collection of poems, which she called Haustliti. The oldest poem with a date is from 1913, and she wrote it to her mother. The collection contains about 160 poems.
