Baldur Garðar Johnsen was the district physician of the Vestmannaeyjar Islands from 1951 to 1960. Baldur was born in Reykjavík on October 22, 1910 and died on February 7, 2006. His parents were Sigfús M. Johnsen, a town bailiff, and Sigurveig Guðrún Sveinsdóttir, a master carpenter in Reykjavík.
Baldur graduated from Reykjavík High School in 1930 and later received his cand. med. from the University of Iceland in 1936. He pursued further studies abroad in England, Denmark and elsewhere. Baldur was appointed district physician in 1938 in the Reykjafjörður and Ögur districts, then in the Ísafjörður district in 1942, a position he held until he was appointed district physician in the Westfjords in 1951. Baldur was chairman of the Westfjords Medical Association from 1942 to 1943 and was a member of the Ísafjörður municipal council from 1944 to 1950.
