Reverend Helgi Sveinsson was born on July 25, 1908, at Hvítsstaðir in Mýrasýsla County.
Completed his matriculation examination in 1930, his teaching qualification in 1934 and his theology qualification in 1936. Children's teacher 1934–37. Pastor at Háls in Fnjóskadalur 1936–40 and at Arnarbælispristakall from 1940 until the end of his life. Lived in Hveragerði from 1942. Teacher there from 1943 at a junior high school, the Gardening School at Reykjar and Hlíðardalsskóli. On the county council from 1946.
Helgi was an idealist and believed in freedom, equality and brotherhood. He was a joy to be around at gatherings of friends and had an easy time writing. Helgi was known for his good speeches and wrote excellent poetry, but he is best known for his occasional poems, many of which became nationally famous.
