Hella. A novel by Hallgrímur Helgason.

Inside the cramped counter, the swollen floors slope down to the corners to the branches of the trees. The air is damp and all the walls are covered with decorative plastic boxes the size of books, all facing the covers. They are adorned with hand-painted photographs in strong colors, although red and fiery red are the most common, and are often of one main character and her shadow. Over shoulders and between thighs, smaller and smaller supporting characters can then be seen as they fade into the background, where perhaps a speedboat or sports car is about to explode. In a daze from these great events, a hunched man sits behind the counter with his hair over his ears and glasses over his eyes, in a shabby brown wool sweater. Before his fingers stands a vertical column of smoke and he sits as if he is basking in its glow. Under the table, in front of him, is a large ashtray full of stumps, he kills them in the same way he makes them and is collecting them. And he himself has seen all the pictures in this collection, which he divides into three categories.
Thrillers. Comedies. Good movies. Can rewind them all in his head and have an opinion on each one, if asked. “Good with food”, “A real cop movie”, “Twelve inches of Top Gun”.
