Jónas was born in Bálkastaðir in Melstaðar County, the son of Jón Jónsson and Ragnhildur Pálsdóttir. Moved to Reykjavík in 1903. Bus driver for years. There is a section about him in the book: We who built this city by Vilhjálm S. Vilhjálmsson.
