Jón was born at Hvolur in Ölvus in March 1859. The son of Jón Hannesson and Sólveigar Jónsdóttir in Hvolur. Jón moved to Reykjavík around the turn of the century 1900. In Reykjavík he initially worked in various jobs, including working for a long time on the town's stone crusher. Jón was a poet and a lover of music and an art writer. He then spent most of his time as a printer in Reykjavík.
