The White Ships. Poem by Guðmundur Böðvarsson.
In the 12th year of Einreiðinn, issue 22, Guðmundur Böðvarsson's The White Ships is discussed. It says: The publishing house "Heimskringla" has recently published a new book of poetry
by farmer Guðmundur Böðvarsson
at Kirkjuból on Hvitársíð, which is called
The White Ships. The magazine Eimreiðin introduced him to Icelandic readers.
a few years ago, with poems
which attracted considerable attention, but few
they knew who the man was. For
almost three years ago he published
the poetry book Kissed Me Sun. She got
warm reception and many people thought they saw
that there was a promising poet there
the journey. It is safe to say,
that with the new book Guðmundur fulfills those hopes — and better still
— as people made of him
after reading the previous book.
This is a major improvement.
Guðmundur not only always composes
well but usually almost perfectly. The other
White ships bring some excellent poems, which are among the best.
the best that has ever happened in Iceland
in recent years. There is no room here
to trace this further, but still
mention poems such as Við hverfisteininn 1936, Fjarða-Björn, Eyrar-rós etc. — It is an honor to Icelandic
peasant woman that she should still give birth
up men like Guðmundur Böðvarsson. As a poet he shows little, is whole and pure, vigorous with his passages, but yet it is as if a string of longing vibrates in his harp.
He composes from an inner need, has been gifted with the gift of singing since birth, and has
better not bury it in the ground
goes.
With this new book, Guðmundur has taken his place at the forefront
class among Icelandic poets.
