Jón Jónsson in Fremstafell was born in April 1908 in Mýri in Bárðardalur. His parents were Aðalbjörg Jónsdóttir, a housewife in Mýri, and Jón Karlsson, a farmer and church organist.
Jón grew up in Mýri and worked on his parents' farm. In 1936 he married Friðrika Kristjánsdóttir. From 1937 to 1940 he was a farmer in Mýri, when he and Friðrika moved to Fremstafell, where they lived their entire life, until 1994 when they moved to Húsavík.
