It was in the days of King Harald the Fair-haired, Halfdan the son of the Black, Gudröð the son of the Hunting King, Halfdan the son of the Gentle and the Eater, Eystein the son of the Fret, Óláfr the son of the Tree-beard, King of the Swedes, that a man came in his ship to Iceland in Breiðdalur, whose name was Hallfreður. That is below Fljótsdalshérað. There was on the ship his wife and son, whose name was Hrafnkell. He was then fifteen years old, friendly and handsome.
Hallfreður put together an estate.
In the winter a foreign maidservant named Arnthrud died, and that is why it is called Arnthrud's place ever since. But in the spring Hallfred moved his farm north over the heath and built a farm there, which is called Geitdal. And one night he dreamed that a man came to him and said:
"There you lie, Hallfreður, and tread carelessly. Take your estate away and go west across the Lagarfljót; there is all your safety."
After that he wakes up and moves his farm out across the Rangá River in Tunga, to a place later called Hallfreðarstaðir, and lives there until he is old. But he was left with a boar and a goat. And the same day that Hallfreður was in
