Dog Breeding. The Diaries of Ólafur Davíðsson 1881-1884. Þorsteinn Vilhjálmsson handled the publication and wrote the introduction.
The diaries that Ólafur Davíðsson wrote when he was in his twenties are a unique source of information about the lives and thinking of young intellectuals in Reykjavík and Copenhagen in the past, a remarkable mirror of the era but at the same time a rare entertainment read where numerous well-known individuals – schoolboys, teachers, better citizens and the general public – are presented in a comical and uncompromising manner. Ólafur describes, among other things, lavish parties where beer, cognac, cigars and wine bread were served, tells gossip stories from town life and discusses his own feelings very openly – not least towards his young schoolmate.

Ólafur Davíðsson (1862–1903) was a naturalist and ethnographer, best known for his collection of folk tales. His diaries from his school years were published in 1955, but were heavily censored.

Scholar and translator Þorsteinn Vilhjálmsson is responsible for this publication and writes a detailed foreword about Ólafur, the diaries, and the spirit of the times.
