Hvammar. Poems after Einar Benediktsson.

Einar was born in October 1864. His father, Benedikt Sveinsson, was a well-known politician and businessman, and Einar's mother, Katrín Einarsdóttir, was a well-off and eloquent woman. Einar himself said that it was from her that he got his gift for poetry. Einar attended the Reykjavík School of Law and graduated in 1884. From there he went to the University of Copenhagen, where he studied law and graduated in 1892.

Hvammmar

Here they shine in all the sun

out and south, with flowery shelters.

At the wharves, blessed souls sat,

which bound soil and sand.

There our birch grew, under tooth and knife,

There trust was placed in the foundations, there life grew,

by the icy open fire, under attack and protection,

as the child's habit of breathing.

There, minds met on a foreign pole;

To the supreme power there is one shining path;

there a mature soul, with conquered struggle,

gains vision over ranks and lands.

A high-spirited, deep-seated power

stirs in the smallest particle of dust.

And messages echo, in angelic silence,

out over the flocks of sheep.
