In the introduction, Sigurður says, among other things, "There are countless examples of poets devoting their lives to putting together one and the same book, refining it and expanding it in scope, changing and refining it as the years passed. The best-known example is probably Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. This book can be seen as a small article on that subject. It is a comprehensive collection of what I believe I can recognize in this particular literary genre without blushing."
