Eva Hjálmarsdóttir was born in Stakkahlíð in Loðmundarfjörður on November 16, 1905. At about the age of 10, she fell ill with epilepsy and her health deteriorated over the years. She spent almost continuous time in hospitals here and abroad and was bedridden for long periods. Eva was in Skagafjörður around 1930, she died in Víðihlíð on July 13, 1962.

Eva began writing at a young age and is believed to have written most of the material for the book Hvítrim vængjum (White Wings) between 1917 and 1922, when she was between the ages of 12 and 17. She wrote childhood memories, humorous stories, fairy tales, poems and stories, and had her material published in magazines such as Eimreiðinni, Jörð and Stígandi. She also wrote a column about dreams and mystical stories in Vísir um hríð. In addition to Hvítri vængjum (White Wings), she published the books Þet er gaman að lifa (It's Fun to Live) (1947), Paradís bernsku minnar (1948), Margt er smátt í mittling manns (A Man's Mitt) (1952), which she published at her own expense, and Á dularvegum (On Mysterious Roads) (1956).
