Draft of a physical, geographical, and historical description of Icelandic ice mountains on the basis of a journey to the most prominent of them in 1792-1794 with four maps and eight perspective drawings. By Sveinn Pálsson. An annotated and illustrated English translation Richard S. Williams, Jr., and Oddur Sigurðsson, editors.
This most important work by the naturalist Sveinn Pálsson (1762-1840), is the most detailed and best work on glaciers written in the 18th century, and indeed well into the 19th. The international history of science of the 18th century cannot be discussed properly unless one can gain insight into Sveinn's contribution. If the work had been published after 1795, it is likely that Sveinn would have been called the father of glaciology. In recent decades, geologists have rediscovered much that Sveinn pointed out but has not been made public until now. The work is published here in English, accurately translated from Danish and reviewed by selected natural scientists. It also mentions the pioneers of glacier research in Iceland, in addition to Sveinn: Þórður Þorláksson Vídalín, Þorvaldur Thoroddsen, Jón Eyþórsson, Sigurður Þórarinsson and Sigurjón Rist. Photographs of local conditions are published in the publication and Sveinn's pictures and maps are compared with modern materials. With the publication of this publication, an effort is made to draw attention to Sveinn Pálsson's significant contribution to glaciology and the contributions that Icelandic scientists have made to the international scientific community.
