It was Sigurður Gunnarsson, a priest and deacon, who was the editor of Iðunn. Born at Ærlækur in Öxarfjörður on 10 October 1812, died on 22 November 1878. Parents: Gunnar Gunnarsson (born 1786, died on 7 August 1819) last a farmer at Hallgilsstaðir in Langanes and his wife Elísabet Sigurðardóttir (born 1788, died on 8 October 1825) a housewife. Paternal uncle of Sigurður Gunnarsson, member of the parliament in Stykkishólmur and father-in-law of Jón Jónsson, member of the parliament in Stafafell. Spouse (20 July 1841): Bergljót Guttormsdóttir (born 12 August 1809, died on 2 October 1877) a housewife, sister of Margrét, 1st wife of Einar Ásmundsson, member of the parliament. Parents: Guttormur Pálsson and his wife Margrét Vigfúsdóttir, sister of Guttormur Vigfússon, member of the Althingi in Arnheiðarstaðir. Children: Guttormur (1842), Margrét (1843), Elísabet (1846), Guðlaug (1848), Jón (1850), Gísli (1852), Gunnar (1853), Stefán Benedikt (1854).
He first began studying silver and brass smithing, but then studied under the theologian Jón Þórarinsson in Valþjófsstaður and Reverend Guttormur Pálsson in Vallanes. He graduated from Bessastaður in 1839.
Taught in Reykjavík in the winter of 1839–1841, and in the summer of 1840 was an attendant of JO Schythe, a Danish naturalist. He then settled in Vallanes and taught. He was given Desjarmýri in 1844, ordained in 1845. He was given Hallormsstaður in 1861, moved there in 1862 and stayed there until the end of his life. He also served as the Þingmúla parish priest from 1869. Dean in the South Múla parish 1863–1876. He learned about medicine from his father-in-law, practiced it extensively and eventually received permission from the government to practice medicine.
