In the wake of the storm. A drama by Lauga Geir.
Lauga Geir (1888-1968) was a woman of Icelandic descent who lived in North Dakota, USA. She worked for most of her life as a teacher, but was also a prolific translator and essayist. This play was performed widely in its time, both in the author's home state and in Icelandic settlements in Canada.

As a subject, she chose the fate of Icelandic settlers in the early years of settlement in North Dakota. The characters are relatively new arrivals from Iceland, and the land and the people who remained are uppermost in their minds. The play is melodramatic in spirit and the characters are well-known in type: the storyteller, the hell-man, the joker, the young couple, the experienced older woman, the swindler, and then the love triangle, righteous people who are almost made happy by their nobility.

It is remarkable how well the work is composed. Of course, it is completely traditional in structure, but the form is sloppy. There is no dead end anywhere and the tension is built up slowly and steadily as the various threads of the story intertwine and reach a climax in the final scene and before everything goes well in the end. The play is therefore well suited to an amateur theater group like this because most of the audience is familiar with this world of ideas from similar plays, in addition to the character development being simple and straightforward.

The work was performed in Iceland in 1999 by an amateur theater group from the West Iceland settlements in North Dakota.
