The Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Charcot was one of the notable men who explored and mapped the Arctic regions at the beginning of the last century, including Amundsen, Scott, Nordenskjöld and Peary. Charcot's memory is inextricably linked to Iceland because on September 16, 1936, the Pourquoi-Pas?, his specially equipped research vessel, ran aground in severe weather off Álftanes in Mýri in Borgarfjörður. This is one of the most tragic maritime disasters in Icelandic history, with a total of 40 people killed.
