The memoirs of Jóhannes Zoëga, the district heating company manager, were published in mid-December 2006. In the book, Jóhannes recounts his childhood in Norðfjörður and tells of his years of study in Akureyri and Reykjavík. He tells of various adventures from the war years in Germany, a “spy trip” and a work stoppage he encountered due to careless remarks about the authorities. When air raids began, he managed to save a house from destruction more than once by extinguishing a burning bomb. He and his partner made their way to Denmark after the war. After the war, he left his mark on history by building the district heating company into the most profitable company in the country.
Jóhannes first served on the board of the Icelandic Society of Engineers around 1950. He was chairman of the society from 1976-78. At that time, a reprint of the Engineers' Journal was undertaken. Jóhannes was made an honorary member of the Icelandic Society of Engineers in 1997.
