Santa's Home. Field survey. Þórarinn Eldjárn processed the institute's data and conducted interviews. Brian Pilkington drew pictures.
One of the main goals of the Santa Claus Home is to strengthen the solidarity of Icelandic Santas in the fight against “Santa Claus”. This may seem a bit paradoxical at first glance, so we got a few of the Santas to explain what this means. Santa Claus, isn’t he one of you or what? Stúfur: He’s Santa Claus? I don’t think so. Where did you raise the man? Giljagaur: “Santa Claus” is not Santa Claus at all. Stekkjastaur: The man has no rights. Giljagaur: A foreigner. Stúfur: Yes, he is a disenfranchised alien, but he has already taken over all our projects. This is so clearly a played figure, who is just pretending. And then we are expected to just silently and silently accept the fact that he is called SANTA CLAUS in all media, both state-run and private. What do you think the country's electricians would say if some scoundrel were to be blown out, take all their work and be called THE ELECTRICIAN? Stekkjastaur: And it's also his fault that the word Santa Claus has taken on a derogatory meaning in the matter. And actually, it's not that strange, as the man says. A real Santa Claus, you often hear that. But are you going to start a fight against him now? Stúfur: Yes, now he'll be punished more. First and foremost, we're going to help people see through him. He buys himself friendship, popularity and influence with gifts. But people should remember the old saying that a gift is a gift. Finally, a question of conscience: Do you believe in Santa Claus? Giljagaur: This is not a question of faith but of certainty. Stekkjastaur: We've seen him ourselves. Stúfur: I saw him at Hagkaup last year.
