Jón Ósmann, ferryman. Kristmundur Bjarnason, compiled.
Jón was born in 1862 on the farm Utanverðunes in Hegranes and was the second oldest of five children of Magnús Árnason and Sigurbjörg Guðmundsdóttir.
Jón was considered one of the most handsome and manly men Iceland had ever produced. Many said that he resembled the heroes and achievers of antiquity; Skarphéðinn was mentioned for comparison. There are descriptions of Jón's physique and character by friends and fellow travelers. Steinunn Jónsdóttir Inge (1874-1974) lived on the farm Garður in Hegranes, not far from Utanverðunes, from 1889-1891. She describes Jón as follows: "Jón was over six feet tall, very broad-shouldered and well-spoken, straight on the field, a good swimmer and, with variations, a good wrestler, quick in turns. He had particularly beautiful and kind eyes, a high forehead and dark, thick hair. When I knew him, he shaved but had a beard on his upper lip. He was always cheerful and humorous, but his jokes were also often serious. He was eloquent and had a good sense of poetry. He was an expert marksman and shot many seals."
