María Jónsdóttir Skagan was born on January 27, 1926 at Bergþórshvoli in Vestur-Landeyjar, Rangárvallasýsla. She grew up there until she was 18 years old. Her parents were the Rev. Jón Jónsson Skagan, pastor at Bergþórshvoli, born at Þangskáli in Skagi on August 3, 1897, died on March 4, 1989, and Sigríður Jenný Gunnarsdóttir Skagan from Selnes in Skagi, born at Sævarland in Laxárdalur on January 21, 1900, died on February 19, 1991.
María studied at the Laugarvatn District School for one winter and then went to the Icelandic Commercial School. At a young age, she suffered a serious spinal injury that prevented her from further education. She did, however, work for years in the office of the State Treasury. In 1960, her spinal injury prevented her from continuing her work and she disappeared from the labor market.
