Sigríður í Brattholtur (1871–1957) is one of the most famous conservationists in Icelandic history. She lived her entire life near Gullfoss, and when ideas arose to harness the waterfall, she began a single-handed and unsupported fight against these plans, a fight for a cause for which she was prepared to sacrifice her life.
For decades, Sigríður spoke out for the waterfall, wanting it to “flow from the hammer … unmolested by human hands.” At first, it fell on deaf ears, but gradually sympathy for her cause grew. At the same time, Sigríður had to deal with difficulties at home and in her personal life.
Historian Eyrún Ingadóttir has spent years researching the life and struggles of Sigríður í Brattholtur. In 2012, she published the historical novel Ljósmóðirin, which critics called "a magnificent tale of destiny", was one of the best-selling books of the year and was also nominated for the Fjörúverðullan.
