The 1918 Katla eruption and its consequences. By Gísli Sveinsson. Published with the permission of the Government of Iceland.
It is therefore obvious that no accounts would have been written about this, the first eruption of Kötlu in the 20th century, apart from a few newspaper articles, if the then sheriff of Skaftfell, Gísli Sveinsson, had not taken action and monitored the eruption from its beginning to end, and recorded
about the observations, a significant report. The sheriff's report is by far the most complete of these accounts and will always be considered the main source on the 1918 Katla eruption. Volcanic eruptions are now such unprecedented events, both for our country and nation and for geological science as a whole, that it is of great importance that everything that concerns them is collected and therefore saved from oblivion. (Náttúrufræðirinn 4th issue, 1960.)
