Crossroads. Fairy belief, fairy settlements and forbidden holidays in Iceland. Text by Bryndís Björgvinsdóttir. Photographs by Svala Ragnarsdóttir.

Icelandic folklore contains numerous accounts of certain customs that humans should observe in their interactions with elves and the underworld. These customs have remained remarkably unchanged over the centuries – at least the part that concerns unconditional respect for the dwellings of elves and the underworld. Today, as in the past, such forbidden areas influence human construction, from road construction to the construction of solar panels.

This book examines fifty-four elf stones, huldufólksklattar, dwarven stones and other sacred sites throughout the country, in words and images, while placing the ancient belief in the proximity of humans and supernatural beings in the context of history, art and scholarship. Crossroads is a unique read for anyone interested in one of Iceland's best-known folk beliefs and the visible influence it has on city and countryside alike.
